A 23-year-old Tanzanian national has been nabbed while begging for money from unsuspecting Kenyans by posing as a disabled mother in the streets of Kenyan coastal city, Mombasa.
Ibrahim Basafar, the County inspectorate Deputy Director in charge of operations said the lady was nabbed following a tip off from members of the public on the activities of suspicious group of foreigners around Makadara in Mombasa.
Basafar said the children caught with the Tanzanian national were not her own children but those ‘rented’ from Kenyan parents.
“Our officers have been investigating this syndicate of con artists from Tanzania. We even have a court case against one suspect who traffics them to Mombasa.”
The County inspectorate Deputy Director further revealed that the con woman makes about Ksh 20,000 to Ksh 15,000 (N53,0000-N72,000) a day and pays the mother of the child Ksh 3,000 (N10,000).
He warned parents against renting their children as the minors are subjected to harsh conditions.
“The sunlight is harsh, there is dirt and sometimes they are even rained on. These children are 10, 12 and 15yr olds.
“We have people at Coast General Hospital who can’t afford medication. They are in pain. These are the people we need to help and not these con men.”
The suspect appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Rita Amwai and was charged with two accounts of obtaining money by false pretense and another of being in the country illegaly.
She pleaded guilty to both counts and was sentenced to 1yr in prison for the charge of obtaining money by false pretense. She was also given an option of paying a fine of Ksh50,000.
On the second count of being in Kenya illegaly, Judge Amwai gave repatriation orders after fulfillment of the first judgement.

TB Joshua ministry was toxic, he caused damages – Journalist Sandra Ezekwesili – ghanapublisher.com
Radio Presenter, Sandra Ezekwesili has alleged that the late founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, SCOAN, Prophet TB Joshua did a lot of harm than good, irrespective of all the good eulogies being credited to him by people.
Recall that the Prophet passed away in Lagos, Saturday evening, after a programme at his church.
In his last words to Christians, Prophet TB Joshua urged them to watch and pray.
Following his sudden death, the deceased man of God has continued to receive accolades for his reported good deeds from members of his congregation.
However, the Lagos based Radio girl, Sandra, in a post via her Twitter account said the prophet who would usually sell anointing oil and advise his church members against visiting a hospital when they were sick failed to practice what he preached as he reportedly visited the hospital before he died.
She claimed the late Prophet caused a lot of damage and anyone saying anything contrary to that is dishonest.
“TB Joshua was reportedly ill and went to the hospital.
“Did he not teach his numerous followers not to try hospitals and abandon their medication for his holy water and anointing oil?
“His ministry did a lot of damage. Any conversation that doesn’t include that, is dishonest.
“I said what I said. The man was irresponsible as a leader, did not walk in the footsteps of Christ and his ministry was toxic and exploitative.
“Death doesn’t erase that. “I had nothing good to say about him while he lived, I won’t start now because he is dead,” she wrote.
